Burnham confirms plans to change the State Pension triple lock from 2030

Last updated 30 September 2026

In his first Labour Party conference speech as Prime minister, Andy Burnham confirmed plans to replace the current State Pension triple lock from April 2030.

Burnham said the government would honour its manifesto commitment to maintain the triple lock throughout the current Parliament, under which the State Pension rises by the highest of earnings growth, inflation or 2.5%.

He confirmed that if Labour wins the next general election then, from April 2030, State Pension will continue to increase annually by the higher of inflation or 2.5%, while retaining its value "relative to earnings over time".

Burnham said the proposed change would "generate significant savings" which would be used to help fund a National Care Service.
